THE SPREAD OFFENSE - RUNNING GAME

November 25, 2018

If people hear”spread” they think of the death game. The truth is the spread running game could be lethal. A few years back I coached at a school that made a run to the Texas high school state championship game. We put the spread rather than because we believed we would predominate from the passing game but since we knew the team would be a good running team.
The spread has become the fastest growing offense at the high school level. I wonder just how many truly understand all facets of the crime. When done properly it may be similar to a complete court run4 game and it will slowly wear another team down. The running game is an integral part of becoming a complete crime.

There are 3 standard schemes for the offense line to find out inside zone, outside zone, and the counter trey. On some level this might seem simple. Unfortunately all three theories are tremendously distinct and often crime lines will fight to be good whatsoever.
At a typical doubles orientation you will find four wide receivers and one running back. The running back is usually put away from playside. So by way of instance if your team is running”2-Base” then the back will be adapting into the quarterback’s left and will crossover and attack both hole and is always trying to find a cutback lane. The back should be thinking bang or bend and has to read on the run. Often the hole will develop backside and as result no player should believe they can take a playoff. Many times a back may end up backside and should the interior receiver isn’t doing his job his man will earn a touchdown saving tackle!
The basis of the spread’s running game is that the zone read. As the rear crosses over the quarterback’s eyes have been on the backside end. If the end closes the quarterback will pull on the ball and run out the back door. If the end remains disciplined or slow plays then it is an automatic give. In this column I will focus on the responsibilities of the quarterback and runners and I will talk about lineup play in a later article.
Again repetition is crucial. Many quarterbacks will guess. They must read on the conduct and respond to what the defense is providing the crime. 23 base is the foundation running drama for its spread offense. The quarterback counter trey works from base and needs to be learned together with 23 base.

Quarterback counter trey will seem like 23 base but there is not any read. In the event the play call was 4 QB counter trey, then the back could align to the right cross over and imitation 3 foundation. The quarterback does not need to ride the ball to back, just let him cross. Backside guard and tackle will pull. The shield will kick the playside end and the handle will seal on the linebacker. Let me say here that thoughts up”4” techniques are difficult to counter because it is tough to execute a down block.

One of the most frequent mistakes by the quarterback will be for him to try and run wide. This play is tight and will be from backside B difference to play side B gap. I promise this play will not work if the QB isn’t disciplined. He has to trust his offense line and be patient. If 23 base have successful the QB counter will succeed too.
Today 45 counter can be conducted by the trunk too. The QB can read this like he can 23 base. Often when the buttocks defensive end sees backside linemen pulling he’ll close and the QB is going to get an opportunity to pull the ball. If a team would like to be successful from the disperse running game they need to become efficient in the counter. It is a miss route drama which keeps the backside honest.

Often within linebackers will cross vital. Tendencies for most disperse teams demonstrate that a vast majority of time if the back is off the running drama is coming to you. One method to keep them honest is to combine the running back’s alignment. Align the rear playside on counter a few. This takes away the QB’s read but break’s the crossover trend. But if your team runs counter well this will hurt them keying crossover tendencies.
The next running scheme is outside zone. There are three outside zone running plays and they demand the wide receiver, running back, and quarterback. Outdoor zone retains defensive ends fair. And equally as inside counter and zone work collectively so can counter and outside zone. Some groups will not widen the finish but will utilize an outside linebacker to split the difference between an inside receiver along with the tackle. (This is where the bubble is significant ).

Having achievement running outside zone will cause defensive ends to widen making them prime targets to be pumped by yanking guards when conducting counter. The toughest type of outside zone play along with the toughest to time is the jet sweep.
The QB will begin the interior receiver in movement and just before he arrives at the QB ball will be snapped and handed to him running full rate. After this drama is perfected it opens up many other possibilities in the racing game and passing game. Offensive linemen will reduce backside and extend playside. It is easy for offensive line coaches to over coach this. Educate your linemen to function to the playside arm pit and keep participated! It is a quick play and comprehension is about the one thing which may result in problems. Playside recipients play a large role in the achievement of this play.
